“Where’s Sage?” Loretta looked around amid the large group of geocachers gathered in the park.

“Not sure. She didn’t let me know she wasn’t coming to tonight’s rally.” It wasn’t a huge surprise, though. Not after the way they’d parted in the parking lot earlier today.

Loretta turned to Caleb and set her hands on her hips. “Y’all didn’t go and waste your opportunity today, did you? I haven’t seen a geocaching photo, mind you. Did they send one to you, Vance?”

“No, honeybun.” Vance slipped his arm around his wife, which took some doing since her elbows were both sticking out.

“It was a short hike, lasting only until we saw a bear.”

Loretta’s eyes widened. “Y’all saw a bear, and I wasn’t even there? I’ve only seen ’em in a zoo. What I wouldn’t give…”

Vance chuckled. “You’d be runnin’.”

“I wouldn’t. You’re not supposed to. Right, Caleb?”

“Right.”

“Well, don’t fret. We’ve got a plan, right, Vance?”

The only plan Caleb needed from this couple included signatures on a pair of checks. One for the marina, and one for the internet society. He didn’t need them in his love life.

Not that he had a love life. For a few minutes earlier today, he’d thought his dreams might be within reach.

He’d been wrong.

Why couldn’t he move on from Sage? He needed to.

“…so she’s coming at the end of the month. I felt sure you wouldn’t mind showing her around, too. You’ve been such a fine tour guide for us.”

Caleb blinked. “Pardon me? Who’s coming?”

“Our daughter, Harper. Didn’t we tell you about her?”

He had a vague memory of this, but what did it matter? Except now she’d be visiting. “That’s nice for you. You’re still planning to stay in Jewel Lake through the Pot of Gold’s grand finale?”

The couple exchanged a look then Vance turned to Caleb. “That’s right, son.”

“And Harper will be with us for the last couple of weeks, Captain. She’s a beautiful girl.”

“That’s… great.”

“I was thinking you could take her out in the Sapphire II. Take her on a hike or two. But if you’re going to run into a bear, I want to be along.”

Vance chuckled quietly.

Wait. What? They wanted him to take Harper around without them along? Were they trying to set something up? He should be honored, but he wasn’t. Not when his heart belonged to Sage.

Sage, who’d kissed him like the sentiments were mutual and then reverted back to her former self in the blink of an eye.

Loretta leaned closer and rested her hand on his forearm. “You’re a good man, Captain, and if our Sage doesn’t see that, another woman will. Maybe our Harper will be lucky enough to catch your eye.”

Caleb opened his mouth and snapped it shut. From the corner of his eye, he caught Eli mounting the steps of the bandstand. “Time to find our seats.”

“You think on what I said,” Loretta whispered as she tucked a hand behind his elbow and did the same to Vance.

Thankfully, Eli kicked off the meeting with team standings and tips for leveraging points in the second half of the treasure hunt.
